Haiti 2010 Case Study


Context


Where? 15km south west of Port Au Prince


Date? 12th January 2010


Cause? Movement on the conservative plate boundary between the Caribbean and North American plates.


Size? 7.0 (richter scale)


Primary effects


Severe shaking of the ground caused 180,000 homes to be destroyed as well as 5,000 schools damaged/ destroyed. 230,000 people were killed and 300,000 injured.


Secondary effects


1.5 million were made homeless and accommodated in over 1,100 squalid camps with limited access to water and sanitation. These camps helped to spread diseases such as cholera, which claimed many lives (especially children). The cost to government was $11.5 billion


Immediate response


The Haitian government struggled to cope and coordinate response efforts so depended on international aid agencies and governments. The UN and USA provided security. Food, water and medical supplies were donated from the US, Dominican Republic as well as the UK. We raised over £100 million.


Long-term response


3/4 of buildings were inspected for damage and repaired. The World Bank pledged €100 million to support the reconstruction and recovery efforts of infrastructure.
